Tailwind CSS
utility-first CSS framework
Tailwind CSS is a free, open-source "utility-first" CSS framework for styling websites. Rather than ready-made components such as buttons and cards, the approach of frameworks like Bootstrap, it provides thousands of small single-purpose classes (for example flex, pt-4 or text-center) that are combined directly in a page's markup. A build step scans the project and outputs only the CSS for the classes actually used, keeping stylesheets small. It is released under the MIT License.
History
Tailwind CSS was created by the developer Adam Wathan and first released in November 2017. Version 1.0 followed in May 2019, version 2.0 in November 2020, and version 4.0 in January 2025, rebuilt around a much faster engine with configuration moved into CSS itself. It is maintained by Wathan's company, Tailwind Labs, which pays for development by selling ready-made interface designs (Tailwind Plus, formerly Tailwind UI) and also publishes the free Headless UI and Heroicons libraries. By 2026 the tailwindcss package was downloaded more than 150 million times a week from npm.
In January 2026 Tailwind Labs laid off most of its engineering team. Wathan said that although Tailwind was more popular than ever, traffic to its documentation, where the paid products are promoted, had fallen about 40% from early 2023 because AI coding tools now write Tailwind code for developers, and that revenue was down close to 80%. Several companies, including Google through its AI Studio, offered sponsorships in response.
Use
Tailwind is one of the most widely used CSS frameworks and the default styling choice of many AI app builders. It is part of the "T3 Stack" popularised by Theo Browne (T3), and the agent-native platform Lakebed compiles Tailwind classes automatically for apps built with Preact and TypeScript.
