Adam Wathan

Canadian developer, creator of Tailwind CSS and founder of Tailwind Labs

History Claim

Adam Wathan is a Canadian software developer and entrepreneur from Ontario, best known as the creator of the Tailwind CSS framework and the founder and chief executive of its company, Tailwind Labs.

Career

Wathan worked as a web developer, including at the Laravel consultancy Tighten, and became known for teaching programming through his books Refactoring to Collections (2016) and the course Test-Driven Laravel, and through his podcast Full Stack Radio. With the designer Steve Schoger he wrote Refactoring UI (2018), a book on interface design for developers. He open-sourced Tailwind CSS in 2017 after building it for his own projects, many of which he coded on live streams, and it grew into one of the most widely used CSS frameworks.

Tailwind Labs funds the free framework by selling ready-made interface designs (Tailwind Plus, formerly Tailwind UI). In January 2026 Wathan announced that the company had laid off most of its engineers. He said that while Tailwind was more popular than ever, AI coding tools were writing Tailwind code for developers who no longer visited its documentation, where the paid products are promoted, and that revenue had fallen close to 80%.
