History
Andrew L. Libo and Edward H. Gersowitz, who had both worked at the law offices of F. Lee Bailey and Aaron J. Broder, founded the firm as Gersowitz & Libo, P.C. in 1984. Jeff S. Korek joined as a named partner in 1992, and the firm took its present name. Michael A. Fruhling joined in 1991 and became a partner in 1999. Libo, who was the firm's managing partner, died in 2011. The firm was at 111 Broadway in Lower Manhattan from 1995 and is now at 140 Broadway.
Work
The firm handles motor vehicle, construction, premises liability, medical malpractice, product liability, toxic tort and sexual abuse cases, among others, and works on a contingency fee. It says it has recovered more than $1 billion for clients since 1984. According to the firm, its cases include a suit over the design of the Bronx River Parkway after a crash that killed six members of one family, which settled for $18.5 million, and a case for twelve families whose children developed leukaemia after illegal dumping at the Pelham Bay landfill in the Bronx, which settled for $12 million.
Gersowitz and Korek have each served as president of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association.
Community
The firm has sponsored the Gardiner Memorial Basketball Classic, a yearly streetball tournament in the Bronx run by the Gardiner Foundation, which gives college scholarships and support to families in the area.
