DesignCraft
open-source page layout app by ArtCraft, modelled on InDesign
DesignCraft is a free, open-source page layout and desktop publishing program modelled on Adobe InDesign, made by ArtCraft. Written from scratch in Rust, it runs natively on macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD and in a browser through WebAssembly, without a subscription, licence server or telemetry.
Features
- Spreads and parent pages, frames and threaded stories, paragraph and character styles, swatches and text wrap.
- A Knuth–Plass paragraph composer, dictionary hyphenation, optical margin alignment and baseline grids.
- Print-ready PDF output with embedded fonts, CMYK and spot colours, bleed, crop marks and PDF/A.
- A documented native file format, and control of every menu, tool and dialog over a JSON channel and an MCP server.
History and availability
DesignCraft was first released on 2 October 2026 as one of the seven original Crafting Apps and is marked as in development. Reviewing it for Tedium, Ernie Smith called it "an InDesign riff" and found that it did not detect system fonts until an update, and that hex colour entry did not yet work. It is released under the MIT or Apache-2.0 licence; official builds are on its page at getartcraft.com, in the storytold/designcraft releases on GitHub and through the ArtCraft Launcher.
