FilmCraft
open-source video editor by ArtCraft, modelled on Premiere Pro
FilmCraft is a free, open-source video editor modelled on Adobe Premiere Pro, made by ArtCraft. Written from scratch in Rust for macOS, Windows and Linux, it includes its own video and audio codecs instead of FFmpeg. ArtCraft describes it as a clean-room reimplementation of Premiere Pro.
Features
- Source and program monitors, a multi-track timeline, three-point editing, every trim mode and J/K/L dynamic trimming.
- An integer timebase that keeps 23.976 fps and 29.97 drop-frame timecode exact.
- Native H.264, HEVC, ProRes, VP9, AAC and Opus codecs.
- Colour grading with curves, colour wheels, HSL secondaries, LUTs and HDR and log workflows, with video scopes.
- About 55 video effects and 30 transitions, keyframes with value and velocity graphs, an audio mixer with automation and EBU R128 loudness meters.
History and availability
FilmCraft was first released on 2 October 2026 as one of the seven original Crafting Apps and is marked as in development. It is released under the MIT or Apache-2.0 licence; official builds are on its page at getartcraft.com, in the storytold/filmcraft releases on GitHub and through the ArtCraft Launcher.
Reception
PetaPixel wrote that FilmCraft "looks nearly identical to Premiere", and Ars Technica that it "closely mimics the look and feel" of Premiere. Phoronix picked it out, with PhotoCraft and LightCraft, as one of the AI-built "clean-room reimplementations" available as native Linux and FreeBSD binaries. PetaPixel noted that Premiere already faces strong competition from DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro.
