OpenJS Foundation
non-profit home of Node.js, jQuery, Electron, webpack and other JavaScript projects
The OpenJS Foundation is a non-profit organisation that hosts and supports open-source JavaScript projects, under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation. It provides the projects with legal, financial and security help and a neutral home not owned by any one company. Its projects include Node.js, jQuery (created by John Resig), Electron, webpack, ESLint, Appium, Node-RED, Lodash and Dojo, about 38 in all.
History
The foundation was formed in 2019 by merging two older bodies. The Node.js Foundation had been set up in 2015 to reunite Node.js with io.js, a fork created after disputes over how the project was run. The JS Foundation had grown out of the jQuery Foundation (2012) and the Dojo Foundation, which merged in 2016. Founding members of the combined foundation included Google, Microsoft, IBM, PayPal, GoDaddy and Joyent. It has received more than €800,000 from Germany's Sovereign Tech Fund for security and maintenance work.
