Name
According to the Kyiv Post, the name Susanin refers to Ivan Susanin, the 17th-century folk hero said to have led enemy troops along a false path. The newspaper writes that he is named differently in some other publications.
History
Susanin told the Kyiv Post that he and his cameraman and best friend Dima had filmed their explorations since childhood, and that a costumed outing Dima uploaded as a joke drew a large audience within a month. The channel's first video was posted in April 2017, and a video from June 2017 about abandoned underground service lines became its first viral hit, according to Know Your Meme. The channel had about 483,000 subscribers by December 2019 and more than 800,000 by September 2020, when the Kyiv Post described him as one of the most recognisable YouTube personalities in Ukraine; by October 2022 it had about 1.7 million.
In March 2019 the Russian YouTuber NFKRZ published a video about him, calling him the next Filthy Frank (the former persona of Joji). In late 2022 clips from his videos, set to the phonk track "Phonky Tribu", spread on TikTok through reposts by other accounts, including one named after Bald and Bankrupt; Know Your Meme reported then that he had no TikTok account of his own.
Work
His videos explore Kyiv's abandoned Soviet structures, metro tunnels and service lines, Soviet bunkers (some of them flooded), and the Chornobyl exclusion zone and Pripyat; the channel also has a series filmed in the tunnels under Paris. Recurring companions include Dima, Gromov and Lafa. The Kyiv Post noted the influence of the Ukrainian video game series S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on the urban exploration community he belongs to, and his videos have English subtitles. They have also shown the people who live in Kyiv's abandoned buildings, whom he called "an invisible layer of Ukrainian society".
He has said that he keeps politics out of his videos, and that he encourages young viewers to go out and explore their city rather than stay at home.
Music
His rap song "Pubertat" ("Puberty"), released as a music video on the channel in December 2018, was its most-viewed video in October 2022 with more than 6.6 million views. He has also collaborated on music videos with the Ukrainian pop group Agon.
