ArtCraft

IDE for artists

History Claim

ArtCraft is a free, open-source desktop and web application for creating AI images and video, made by ArtCraft. It calls itself an "IDE" for AI image and video and aims to give artists and filmmakers precise control over what a model produces: instead of relying on a text prompt alone, users compose a shot on a 2D canvas or in a 3D scene and then have an image or video model render it.

Features

  • 2D canvas: image layers, background removal, drawing tools, masks and inpainting.
  • 3D editor: backdrops, props and 3D meshes made from images, character posing and camera blocking, and "image to location" for keeping one set consistent across several shots; sets can also be built from Gaussian splats made with World Labs' Marble model.
  • Generation: text to image, prompted image editing and image to video, using third-party models including Nano Banana from Google, GPT Image from OpenAI, Seedance and Kling.

History

ArtCraft began as "controllable AI for artists", allowing precise editing of AI-generated images and videos after generation. Version 0.0.1 was published on GitHub in July 2025, and version 0.41.0 in September 2026. Brandon Thomas, who leads the project, presented it on Hacker News in February 2026 as an "AI movie making and design engine" written in Rust, saying he had built it for himself and fellow filmmakers. In October 2026 its makers released the Crafting Apps, a separate suite of open-source Rust desktop applications, such as PhotoCraft, in which ArtCraft's image model is offered alongside third-party ones. Ars Technica reported that sales of token-based access to the ArtCraft model and IDE are meant to fund the free Crafting Apps.

Availability

Builds for Windows 10 or newer and macOS 12 or newer are on getartcraft.com and on GitHub, and a browser version runs at app.getartcraft.com. The code is dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. Generations are paid for with credits, through monthly plans or one-time packs; the company says the app can also be used with one's own compute or third-party subscriptions. Thomas has also described a variant, ArtCraft-X, that works with subscriptions to other AI services.
