Michael Joseph Madigan is an American politician who was the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the longest-serving leader of any legislative body, state or federal, in the history of the United States. From 1983 until 2021, he held the position for all but two years. Considered the state's political boss, Madigan was a powerful figure in the Democratic Party of Illinois until his resignation from office in 2021. He was later convicted of bribery, wire fraud, and other criminal offenses arising from his time in office.
