He was elected in a 2019 special election to become a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from the 86th district, and served in that position until 2022. He was one of the first Palestinian-American and Muslim Americans to be elected to the Virginia General Assembly. He lost the Democratic primary for the seat to Irene Shin in June 2021. Following this defeat, he has unsuccessfully run for two different positions. |
