He previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2007 and Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs between 2007 and 2009, both in cabinets of Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek, and then as Minister of Defence from 2010 to 2012 under prime minister Petr Nečas.
